The Sandows Chair by René Herbst is an avant-garde masterpiece from 1928 and a prime example of the radical material aesthetics of modernism. Instead of conventional upholstery, Herbst uses elastic bands ("Sandows") for the seat and backrest, which are clamped into a chrome-plated tubular steel frame.
This innovative concept not only gives the chair a unique industrial character but also surprising seating comfort. The minimalism of the design, coupled with its consistent functionality, made the Sandows chair one of the first truly industrial pieces of designer furniture.
